Royal A trailed Castle Inn after the first round but the Grenville leaders took the lead in the next section and stayed there, pushing further ahead until there were no more questions to be answered.  The win gave them the two points needed to put the divisional championship beyond doubt.  Paignton Sea Anglers D, who were already assured of at least runners-up spot, picked up another win in their Christmas derby against the A Anglers.  D Anglers had an eleven-point lead going into the last round, so losing the section 10-2 was not the disaster it could otherwise have been.  Crown & Sceptre’s defeat of Royal C left three teams on six match points with one week of competition left.  The Crown took the lead from the off and had the game won before the commencement of the last round.

Bickley Mill moved to the top of the Hawkins table for the first time since week four, courtesy of Torquay Rugby Club who failed to raise a side for their match.  Bickley would have stayed second had it not been for Devonport A defeating the former leaders Devonport B in a very close game.  The A team held a four-point lead for most of the match but a perspiration-inducing last round saw the advantage cut, although they held on for a 44-43 victory.  Preston Con Club’s win at Churston Golf Club Wytookays took them above the absent Rugby Club in the table, with their final-round flourish making a cantered victory look very impressive.

Royal A kept their noses ahead in the race for the Grenville title, with a very comfortable victory over Castle Inn, secured before the end of conferring.  Royal C kept the excitement alive by defeating Crown & Sceptre in a high-scoring match which leaves everything to play for in the last round of matches in January.  D Anglers defeated their A team but are too far behind Royal C on aggregate points to overhaul them, even in the unlikely scenario of the D Anglers scoring a maximum points in the final match, coupled with the even less likely prospect of their Babbacombe rivals failing to pick up a single point in their final match as well.

Torquay Rugby Club’s failure to fulfil also had a direct effect on the Hawkins Sport table.  Devonport B were up against it, playing their undefeated colleagues from the Devonport’s A team, and they duly lost 33-22.  The Bickley’s two gratis points took them two points above the Dev B in the table, with the final week clash between the two teams taking on an added importance to both sides.  Preston Con Club won all the individual rounds in their match with Churston Golf Club Wytookays, and took both match points with a 16-10 victory.

Top scorers: Grenville - Barnaby Tuck (Royal A) 12 & Hawkins - Peter Pearse (Devonport A) 12
